Volume I, Chapter §8.3 Law Office Investigation |
Duties of the Paralegal Investigator
Lecture Notes . . .Witness Statements The most important difference between witness statements is formal v. informal statements. Formal statements are usually typed, and are often notarized. Informal statements are almost always handwritten, as they are usually created because a witness has said something of importance that was unexpected during an interview. The paralegal wants to "lock the witness in" to their statement, so she/he writes it down. Try not to make a big deal of the statement. Don't let the witness know that you find the statement important. The best way to handle it is to tell the witness that you usually wrap the interview up with a quick list of the points made during the interview. Then jot down five or six points, including the critical one. Have the witness sign or initial the document.

Copernic Agent
One of the best-kept secrets regarding free software is Copernic Agent. It comes in multiple versions, but the free one is very powerful. Whether you upgrade to the Professional version is your choice. To start with, it is strongly recommended that you download the Personal version of Copernic at:
www.copernic.com/en/products/agent/index.html
The major difference with Copernic is that it allows you to not only search using multiple search engines, it saves the results of those searches on your computer. For detailed and in-depth searches, this is invaluable.
Shhhhh!
One more thing. Don't tell everyone else you work with about Copernic! You want to keep it as an advantage over others in the firm!
Legal Site Search
For local information, try either using Copernic or one of the search boxes on the right side of this page, and type the following query:
law legal (your county) (your state) information
Again, the nice thing about Copernic is that after conducting the above search, the results are saved within that software on your computer. But even using Google, Yahoo, or Bing will result in some relevant sites that you may want to save to your favorites.
