The Foundations of Legal Research

Publishers: A Game of Musical Chairs

§2.6

Introduction
Law book publishers have merged, been bought, split up, and merged again over the past few years. The key is not to fight it. The only reason it even matters, eventually, is that there are two research systems developed by two different publishers. You will learn about both of these systems below.

PUBLISHERS
The major reasons to know who published what books is that they use different research systems. Those originally published by West use the Key Number System, and those originally published by Lawyer's Cooperative Publishing Company utilize the Total Client Service Library. Other publishers typically don't have a system. Much more on this stuff later.
